Website hosting in EC2

When a client recently asked if his website could be hosted from within the EC2 London postcode area, my response was immediate, ‘I shouldn’t think that will be too much hassle’, much to my clients surprise…

Much to my surprise too, its not that straightforward!

There are indeed many hosts physically located in that part of London, but their data centers are spread far and wide.

This post will grow over time, and for now is where I’ll store some of my findings;

Data Center Map is a free web service acting as the link between providers and clients in the data center industry, making it easier for clients to find potential providers matching their needs. The service focuses on colocation and IP transit, but also covers a lot of other data center services such as wholesale space, dedicated servers, remote hands, internet exchanges and much more.

Google algorithm changes

2011 has been a year of changes at Google, as there were revision and tweaks to algorithms all through, as well as many updates that were aimed at refining the user experience and increasing user loyalty towards Google, which as we can see has been duly rewarded for its efforts, as it became most sought after web destination in 2011. December 2011, saw Google add another set of 30 updates to its algorithms (in addition to the 10 at the start of the month) to help users find the best results on the net and each comes with its own code names for easy remembrance.

Microsoft dumping IE6

Microsoft has reportedly celebrated the demise of its Internet Explorer version 6 application by baking a cake, as announced by BBC on 4th January.

VoIP

Windows 8 tablets lose Flash

Flash has had a turbulent couple of years, with Apple dropping support in 2010 as it caused Macs to crash, and now Microsoft dropping a bombshell of their own, reporting that new Windows 8 tablets will not support Flash – Flash will continue to be supported in Windows Desktop and the desktop version of Internet Explorer.

What are Cookies?

A cookie, also known as a web cookie, browser cookie, and HTTP cookie, is a piece of text stored on a user’s computer by their web browser. A cookie can be used to ‘remember’ you, it can store your site preferences, shopping cart contents or any other useful data which the website can recall the next time a person using that computer visits the site.

What’s changing?

On May 26^th 2011 a new EU originated law came into effect that requires website owners to make significant changes to their sites and may fundamentally change the whole web browsing and shopping experience for everybody.
